The International School

July 1979, the first International School took place where 48 students went to Salt Lake City on a foreign exchange program to experience life and school in a foreign country.

In July of 1976, the signing ceremony between the Girl Scouts in Matsumoto and in Salt Lake at the Girl Scouts Center of Utah.

Hiroshi Yamagishi, Leader of the Boy Scout troop in Matsumoto, visited Salt Lake City with 11 others and formed a union with the Boy Scouts in Salt Lake City in 1979.
  In 1986, Matsumoto City Mayor Shoji Wago visited Salt Lake City in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of many of the sister city.

In 1991, the Shimin Times and Deseret News formed a sister company program. In the picture are President Chikara Shinpo, Committee Chair Hisami Nishibori, and President William Morty.

In 1998, group leader Tadashi Aruga was invited to Seiji Ozawa's dinner party at his house in the forest after hearing Ozawa direct the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra at Tanglewood.

The Delegation was invited a party by Mr. Ozawa at his mansion in a forest.
  In 1998, the SLOC Group Council based themselves in Matsumoto City as they observed the Nagano Winter Olympics.

The SLOC led by Genine Carter visited Matsumoto City and toured Olympic facilities, elementary schools, and spent the night at the home of locals.
  At that time Salt Lake City mayor Koradini and city council members also visited Matsumoto.

In May of 1991, the first America-Japan week was held 16 groups, totalling 231 people, participated and widely introduced Matsumoto City on Matsumoto Day.

October 1992, Deputy Mayor Yoshio Matsumura and Chamber of Commerce and Industry Head Leader Nobuhiko Iijima visited Salt Lake City by request of the Matsumoto Central Library to donate the Utah Nippo and a printing press. The ceremony took place in front of the grave of Uneo and Kuniko Terasawa.

July 1993, Kazuko Terasawa and two others visited Matsumoto where the Utah Nippo donation commemoration ceremony took place at the Matsumoto Central Library.

In 1896, Kuniko Terasawa was born in Iida City. In 1921, she married Uneo Terasawa, and inherited her late husband's newspaper printing press. She then continued to keep the Utah Nippo alive for the next 52 years. In 1968, she received the 5th rank Zuiho award and in 1987, the Eibon award. In 1965 she became an honorary citizen of Matsumoto City.

In 1993, the Utah Nippo reserch committee was formed to put such valuable materials into practice. They read the Utah Nippo every month, also hold many kinds of lectures. Thes year they celebrate the 15 year anniversary of the committee. The president of the committee is current president of the Shimin Times and committee member of the sister city program, Chikara Shinpo.

The Utah Nippo Matsumoto Citizens Committee reprinted the issues before and after the World WarⅡ. The reserch committee issues their paper "Study of The Utah Nippo" every year.

In 1993, Brigham Young University Professor Farnsworth visited Matsumoto and requested for interns to be accepted. Since then Matsumoto accepts interns annually. The interns are serving their purpose in understanding Japanese culture.

The interns at the Shimin Times write articles in their column in Japanese based on their experiences in Matsumoto.

Interns at Astep Shinshu actually participate in business and learn how to approach various types of customers.

AET (Assistant English Teachers) is a program developed by the Ministry of Education to strengthen the English Education program in Japan.

Matsumoto has been exclusively taking AET members from Salt Lake City. There are teaching at local elementary and junior high schools.
